EDUCATION
REHABILITATIVE ULTRASOUND IMAGING RESIDENCY MODULE;
LUMBOPELVIC REGION
The focus of this residency module is to teach participants the basic knowledge and skills necessary for the generation and interpretation of real time ultrasound images of the deep muscles of the lumbopelvic region. The primary focus will be practical ultrasound image generation and interpretation. This will include:
- Introduction to the technical aspects of ultrasound imaging as it applies to imaging muscle contraction in the lumbopelvic region.
- Imaging specifics for the abdominal wall (external and internal oblique, transversus abdominis and rectus abdominis), pelvic floor muscles (abdominal approach), lumbar multifidus and the associated fascia.
- Improvement of palpatory skills for TA, PFM (abdominal) and dMF activation, confirmation with USI.
In addition participants will have the opportunity to see the following concepts/techniques applied clinically by observing therapists assessing and treating patients.
- Overview of contemporary approaches regarding lumbopelvic dysfunction, and postural control. ␣ Evidenced based assessment of load transfer through the lumbopelvic region.
- Discussion of the literature surrounding the topic of spinal postural control.
- Review of the anatomy and neurophysiological characteristics of the muscles responsible for postural control of the lumbopelvic region.
- Correlation of load transfer & muscle activation assessment findings, through to treatment plan development.
- Facilitation strategies for activation of TA, PFM, and dMF, confirmation with USI
- Down training strategies for global muscle hypertonicity
SPECIFIC DETAILS
Format
- Four days (Monday – Thursday) - total of 24 hrs.
- Instruction will be done in a 1:1 format with Jackie Whittaker.
- The initial day will involve approximately 2 hours of lecture, orientation and 4 hours of practical intervention.
- The remaining three days will involve 6 hours on practical intervention (including interaction with patients) as well as time to review and expand on concepts visited in the practical session.
- Residents will be assigned pre as well as daily reading which will serve to facilitate the learning process.

- $1300.00 CND

STEP 2.
Once your CV and deposit are received we will contact you by email to discuss possible dates for attendance.
STEP 3.
When the dates for the residency have been set the following items must be addressed and their proof received one month before the residency program begins.
- Proof of malpractice insurance, ($5,000,000.00) for the period and jurisdiction (British Columbia, Canada) of the residency module. If your current malpractice insurance is not valid for the period or jurisdiction contact the Canadian Physiotherapy Association at www.physiotherapy.ca or 1-800-387-8679 and ask about temporary insurance.
- Proof of a courtesy membership from your specific professional association, (i.e. the College of Physical Therapists of BC, or the British Columbia Medical Association) in British Columbia

PLEASE NOTE that proof of malpractice insurance and a courtesy membership must be received 1 month prior to attending the residency program and that the process of attaining this proof may take up to 6 – 8 weeks.
